Ethereum on Tour arrives in Málaga

On September 25th, the Univesity of Málaga hosted one of the stops of Ethereum on Tour, the global initiative driven by the Ethereum Foundation and BuidlGuidl. The event, organized in collaboration with NICS Lab and Decentralized Security, brought together over 60 students, researchers, and blockchain enthusiasts at The Green Ray building.

An accessible introduction for everyone

The day kicked off with a talk by Rodrigo Román, professor at the University of Málaga, who delivered a clear and accessible introduction to the fundamentals of blockchain and Ethereum. His presentation made it easy for all attendees, regardless of their previous knowledge, to grasp the basic concepts and build the foundation for what came next.

Rodrigo Román‘s lecture

Rodrigo also lectures on the annual blockchain course offered every year at the university. The course is designed so that students not only learn the theory but also develop practical skills within the ecosystem. Throughout the course, students build real applications, work with smart contracts, and become familiar with key Web3 development tools, preparing them for academic or professional projects in the industry. Additionally, the course is conducted in collaboration with companies in the sector, where students carry out their final course project.

For those interested in deepening their knowledge, we have set up a pre-registration notification form for the course. This way, you can receive information directly as soon as the spots open!

From theory to practice: building on Ethereum

The second part of the event was led by Carlos, member of BuidlGuidl, and was without a doubt the most hands-on.

In his session, Carlos grounded Ethereum’s value by showcasing real-world use cases in areas such as Decentralized Finance (DeFi), and most importantly, by showing how to take the very first steps in building real applications on Ethereum.

Carlos introducing his talk

The centerpiece of his session was Scaffold-ETH, an open-source tool developed by him together with the BuidlGuidl community. Scaffold-ETH is an outstanding resource for anyone starting their journey in Web3 development. It allows you to spin up a decentralized application in minutes, test features, and experiment with smart contracts without reinventing the wheel.

For example, in this video we can see how Austin builds an Ethereum dapp using Scaffold, Foundry, and Next.js, in just 8 minutes.

Alongside it, the community maintains Speed Run Ethereum, a platform with practical challenges designed to learn by building with Scaffold-ETH.

The live demo proved how anyone can move from an idea to a prototype in just a matter of minutes, opening the door for students to start experimenting on their own.

A special guest: Austin Griffith

One of the highlights of the event was the participation of Austin Griffith, founder of BuidlGuidl and one of the main driving forces behind Scaffold-ETH. Although he couldn’t attend in person, Austin joined via video call to speak directly with the students, share his vision of Ethereum, and encourage the local community to keep building.

More than just an event

For us at Decentralized Security, it was an honor to host Ethereum on Tour at the University of Málaga. We’d like to give special thanks to the Ethereum Foundation and BuidlGuidl for making this gathering possible. The collaboration has been excellent, and we are convinced this is just the beginning of many future projects together.

The Ethereum Foundation, through its Developer Acceleration team and the Academic Secretariat, drives Ethereum on Tour not only to bring this technology closer to students but also to create lasting connections between the Ethereum community and academia. In Málaga, we’ve seen first-hand the potential of this initiative to spark new opportunities for research and collaboration.

This commitment is also reflected in the support that the Ethereum Foundation has decided to provide through funding for student scholarships in the blockchain course we organize annually at the University of Málaga. This support will undoubtedly be a key boost in training the next generation of professionals in the field.

From Málaga, we look ahead with excitement and with the certainty that we can play an active role in this global dialogue. At Decentralized Security, our biggest aspiration is to contribute to the Ethereum ecosystem through research and real-world impact projects, and this event has been another step in that direction.

Networking…

The event wrapped up as it should: sharing pizzas, conversations, and plenty of laughs. See you at the next one!
